The Libertines Festival: The Libertines Wave 2025 Goodbye
BY NADINE GOETZ
The Libertines put on a major outdoor festival at Gunnersbury Park in London on August 9th, 2025. Doherty and his bandmates invited many friends from the industry to be part of the show. The outdoor show highlighted their latest album, “All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade,” released in 2024; it was touted as the band‘s final show of the year and the finale of their latest tour. The supporting lineup, carefully curated by the band, consisted of The Lambrini Girls, Real Farmer, Soft Play, Hak Baker, and Supergrass.
One thing that stood out was the chemistry among the band members, especially between Doherty and Barat. Peter Doherty (guitar/vocals), Carl Barat (guitar/vocals), Gary Powell (drums), and John Hassall (bass) have been playing together for over 20 years and still bring the same energy to each performance, clearly enjoying themselves on stage. During their set, Doherty shared fond memories of meeting up in Hassall’s childhood bedroom near Gunnersbury Park and expressed his gratitude for sharing the stage with the rest of the band. Their setlist at Gunnersbury Park was a mix of new fan favorites such as “Barons Claw” and older classics such as “Don‘t Look Back Into The Sun.”
The festival kicked off with Dutch punk band Real Farmer, who are signed to Doherty‘s label, followed by The Lambrini Girls and Hak Baker. Kent-based punk duo Soft Play and Britpop legends Supergrass played next, before The Libertines took the stage. Doherty introduced Supergrass (and the other acts) himself, sharing nostalgic memories from years ago, which made the event feel more personal and added an intimate touch to the day. Despite past struggles, The Libertines have proven to themselves and the industry why they remain relevant in the indie scene after more than 20 years – maybe even more now than they used to be. The crowd cheered, danced, and sang along throughout the entire show – people were lying in each other‘s arms, soaking in the nostalgia of the 2000s that the band brought to West London for the evening. Known for their raw garage rock sound, energetic performances, and chaotic chemistry, the band’s onstage presence inspired feelings of joy and the humorous banter between Barat and Doherty demonstrated a deep sense of camaraderie among all four band members.
The Libertines’ performance at Gunnersbury Park left a lasting impression on attendees and served as a perfect conclusion to their tour and their 2025 concert season. It was a night that reaffirmed the magic only The Libertines can create — a mix of nostalgia and excitement — leaving fans eager for the next chapter in the band‘s exciting, tumultuous career.
