Fans’ “Devotion” to Sunday (1994)
BY NADINE GOETZ
Sunday (1994) played a sold-out show at the Village Underground in London on May 14th 2025, supported by Beaux. The venue was an intimate, though industrial, setting allowing around 700 fans to connect with the music and the band. Sunday (1994) is a dream pop band from Los Angeles consisting of Paige Turner (vocals), Lee Newell (guitar), and Puma (drums). This tour, they‘re joined by Lola Colette on bass. The word dreamy best describes the band’s music as well as their live performances. From the moment the band stepped on stage it was clear that they, and especially Turner, had created a mystical and dreamy atmosphere. Last September, the band played their first London show at the Camden Assembly for half the crowd that met them on the 14th. With their new EP titled “Devotion” released just earlier this month, there’s no doubt that the band is on the rise.
Opening the show was Beaux, another rising talent from London who was discovered by Matty Healy, which eventually scored him a record deal with the label Dirty Hit. Beaux told the Rolling Stone that The 1975’s album “A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships” and particularly “Sincerity is Scary” helped him heal after a break-up and furthermore helped him realize what kind of music he wanted to make. His set was a great mix of alternative, indie with certain pop influences and certainly fit with the night’s headliner, radiating the same chill, laid-back vibes. He even went on to mention that he has a song called “Blonde,” just like Sunday (1994), before playing the song for the crowd. The 25-year-old expressed his gratitude for being able to play at Village Underground, saying how it was a venue he wanted to play for a while and how happy he was to be able to do so tonight.
When Sunday (1994) took the stage, the band, especially front woman Paige Turner, immediately captured the audience with their stage presence. They had the fans singing along loudly, swaying to the music, and it was clear that there was an intimate connection between the band and their audience through their music. Turner went on to mention that this is their first proper UK headline tour, thanking the fans for immediately selling it out. The setlist was a mix of songs from their 2024 self-titled album “Sunday (1994)” and their new EP “Devotion,” which she explained is a sequel to the first album. Before singing “So Blue” off of their latest EP, Turner explained how the songs from the new EP are connected to the album, explaining how “So Blue” connects to their song “Blossom” which is about seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Their stage presence is very natural, almost magical at times, and the band is doing an amazing job by connecting captivating harmonies, stunning vocals, and powerful instrumentals in their live performances. They ended their performance with “Tired Boy,” the song which is the reason “why they are here,” as Turner called it.
Sunday (1994) is currently on a UK tour and are set to play a few festivals around the UK within the next weeks. Turner also mentioned that they will be back soon, giving fans a chance to experience them live if they missed out on their performance at the Village Underground this week. The band is definitely one to look out for in the future, captivating the audience with magical live performances and great music.
