The Night We Met: Lord Huron in Philly

BY MADDI WHITING

On August 1st, indie-rock band Lord Huron took over the TD Pavilion at The Mann in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the delight of thousands of fans. The band, formed in 2010, released their newest album, “The Cosmic Selector Vol. 1,” just weeks before - on July 18th - and is currently touring the work.

Referred to on social media as “an intercontinental trek through time and space,” this tour promised an evening of complex, soul-transporting performance, which the band certainly delivered. While showcasing a number of tracks off the most recent album, the night’s setlist thoughtfully spanned Lord Huron’s discography balancing beloved fan favorites with fresh, new sounds. With this, it was no surprise as thousands of voices echoed hauntingly from the depths of the amphitheater-style venue, joining the band’s lead singer, Ben Schneider, for the duration of “The Night We Met.” Featured on the 2015 album, “Strange Trails,” the song is one of the band’s most popular alongside “Ends of the Earth” - both of which were the hits of the evening. With their spellbinding, ethereal sounds, these tracks are likely familiar even to the casual listener as they skyrocketed in popularity in the late 2010s and continue to make their presence known on social media.

Lord Huron’s sound is a cinematic fusion of atmospheric indie rock and folk, steeped in ghostly Americana - equal parts nostalgic and otherworldly. With each note, the music unfolds into an immersive soundscape where reverb-drenched guitars, echoing vocals, and sweeping rhythms conjure images of wide-open landscapes and forgotten memories. Each track carries a haunting beauty that evokes the feeling of drifting between past and present, reality and myth - just as the tour promises. On stage, this translates into a profound experience; in many ways, the performance surpassed the conventions of a concert and was truly a journey through a soundscape that was as emotionally resonant as it was sonically expansive.

What really sets this tour apart is how it truly and utterly embraces being a performance at its core. Abandoning most pleasantries and filler, the evening let the songs shine as they were supported by some of the most beautiful and captivating pieces of set decoration and projections on the road today. With band members spread across a mountainous platform, Schneider functionally singing into a telephone booth, and a real life Cosmic Selector, this concert was a delight not just for the ears but for the eyes. Not to mention a pair of dancers who served as exquisite storytellers or the art that was the background to it all.

Whether you’re a lifelong fan or discovering Lord Huron’s music for the first time, this tour provides a little something for everyone. Between the musical performance, production quality, and expert storytelling, Lord Huron has successfully produced what I believe to be one of the most compelling tours playing at the moment. Luckily for readers, the band has shows lined up through November of 2025, both in the states and the UK, so there are plenty of chances to experience the magic for yourself!
